SHPE promotes the development of Hispanics in the engineering, science, and other technical professions to achieve educational excellence, economic opportunity and social equity.  SHPE Houston Chapter shares and promotes the same objectives and goals as the national organization, SHPE Inc.

Objectives

  • The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers endeavors to:

  • Promote the advancement of Hispanic engineers and scientists in employment and education.

  • Increase the number of Hispanics entering the engineering and science fields.

  • Provide scholarships and educational grants to students and support programs that enhance the Hispanic student's educational goals.

  • Encourage improvement in the quality of education and promote programs that prepare students for technical careers.

  • Develop an effective early outreach recruitment mechanism to advise and encourage Hispanic students to pursue higher education in the engineering and science fields.

  • Develop a retention program at the university and college level to assist students completing their engineering degree programs.

  • Develop within established SHPE student chapters, peer work/study programs to guide, counsel, and tutor lower division engineering and science students.

  • Work closely with the community to promote career awareness, self-esteem, and national pride. SHPE members are encouraged to participate in local activities, advisory boards, and to serve the community in general.

  • Inform the general public of technical contributions and achievements of Hispanic Americans.

  • Provide a forum for exchange of technical information.

  • Develop and participate in programs with industry and educational institutions that benefit professionals and students seeking technical careers.

  • Provide members with the opportunities to expand their career abilities through conferences and workshops. Members are encouraged to join and participate with professional associations in their respective fields of expertise. Many members serve on the boards of these professional associations.

SHPE's mission is to promote the development of Hispanics in engineering, science and other technical professions to achieve educational excellence, economic opportunity and social equity.

We will fulfill this mission by increasing educational opportunities, promoting professional and personal growth, carry out our social responsibility to be involved in education, business and government issues and enhancing pride within our organization and reinforcing our reputation as a vital Hispanic organization.

1.  Work to reform the educational system to meet the nation's future technical and scientific needs.
